It's hard to explain but I'll try, it's a different method of firing that uses a lot of metallic looking glazes and has a distinct look of shinyness or almost like being covered in oil a lot of the time. My teapot that is carved is also raku if that helps. The firing is also very quick, it takes about an hour, compared to 12+ hours in a regular kiln. so it's instant gratification almost. and funner to watch. The pots are fired fast until they turn glowing orange, then they are pulled out and put into trash cans and you throuw sawdust on top. raku is interesting because there is an element of the unexpected. and the surface often varies in color.

it is! every now and then we make a party out of it, bring food and stuff...once we roasted marshmellows and chocolate over the top of the kiln. I wish you could be here for our art party that would be awesome.
